IB Mathematics and the right choice

IB Mathematics is More Than Just a Subject – It’s a Choice, and the Differences Really Matter

In the IB Diploma Programme, students can choose different math pathways, each designed for a different type of learner and future plan.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA)
This is the most theoretical option. It’s ideal for students who enjoy algebra, calculus, mathematical proofs, and abstract thinking. If you’re considering studies in engineering, physics, computer science, or mathematics, AA is usually the best choice – especially at Higher Level (HL).

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (AI)
This pathway focuses on solving real-world problems. You’ll work with statistics, modeling, technology, and data analysis, often using calculators and software. AI suits students interested in economics, business, social sciences, biology, or design – and it’s especially popular with those who like to see practical applications of mathematics.

HL vs SL – What’s the Difference?
HL (Higher Level) means more content, greater depth, and a faster pace.
SL (Standard Level) focuses on core topics and is less intensive.

The right choice depends on your strengths, interests, and future study plans – not on what sounds “harder” or “better.”

IB Mathematics is challenging no matter which pathway you choose. But when you pick the level that suits you, math stops feeling overwhelming.

Join a lesson with Ms. Ewa Wyciszczok, a graduate of Jagiellonian University and Imperial College London.

She teaches IB Mathematics, but don’t expect dry formulas and silent classrooms. Her lessons are dynamic, interactive, and thinking-based, not memorization-based. Whether HL or SL, she knows exactly how to break down complex topics into simple parts, connect them to real-life situations, and make students truly understand what they’re doing (yes, even calculus!).

What really sets her apart?

  • Clear explanations that make difficult topics accessible

  • Deep knowledge of the IB programme and assessment criteria

  • High expectations combined with genuine care for students

She believes mathematics is a skill you develop – not a talent you’re born with. More confidence, less stress, and results that speak for themselves.
